Thinning Hair In Women - What You Need To Know
Have you noticed that when you comb your hair that more and more hair ends up in the brush? Or when you wash your hair the plughole is blocked up with lots of your hair? Thinning hair in women is a real issue and one that can have a huge effect on self-esteem. But what causes it and, more importantly what can be done about it.
First of all it is probably as well to be clear what we are talking about. The terms fine hair, thin hair and thinning hair are often used interchangeably but there is a subtle difference. 'Fine hair' refers to the diameter of each strand with fine hair having a small diameter. 'Thin hair' refers to the density of hair strands on the head. The usual number for a human head is between 90,000 and 130,000. If your hair is thin it will have a lower number of strands per square centimeter. 'Thinning hair' is where the hair is becoming sparser.
What causes thinning hair?
There can be a number of reasons for hair loss and thinning hair in women. There seems to be a genetic factor involved. If your mother suffered then it is more likely that you will as well. However the genes can be passed down from either the mother's or the father's side. Certain events can lead to hair loss including heavy periods, childbirth and being under stress. Having an underactive thyroid or suffering anemia (low blood cell count) can also lead to hair falling out.
