Hair Growth Products - Which Ones Work?
There are various hair growth products on the market. But there is a problem. Some of these need to be taken on a daily basis for an extended period of time before any results are seen. This can mean that you have already spent quite a lot of money before you can decide whether or not the product works. There are also a few products that are just outright scams.
So here are some products that have been proven to work for a majority of people that have tried them. Notice that I said majority. Very few products, including some well-known medical drugs, will have a 100% success rate.
Minoxidil - This is a drug that has been found to have properties that help prevent hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth in some men. The most popular brand is Rogaine (known as Regaine outside of the US). This product is a liquid or foam that is applied directly to the scalp. It is available across the counter so there is no need for a prescription. The most common side effect is an itchy scalp. It is most likely to work for hair regrowth to the top of the head not the temple area.
Finasteride - this is a drug that is effective in helping patients with male pattern baldness. One of the best-known hair growth products using this drug is called Propecia. It works by inhibiting the enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme is instrumental in converting the male sex hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is known to have an effect on hair follicles, which leads to the nutrient supply being reduced and the hair eventually falling out. Hair loss occurs around the temples and top of the head because there are more sweat glands in these regions. Products that inhibit DHT are sometimes known as DHT blockers.
Vitamins - There are a number of nutrients that are associated with keeping hair healthy. The main vitamins for hair loss include vitamin B5, B6, B12, and B7. vitamin E also has a role to play as does the mineral zinc. maintaining a healthy diet is important for preventing hair loss and promoting all round health.
